I spent last weekend in the north of Canada.
White. Cold. Absolutely beautiful.
We decided to go snowshoeing through the woods.
After about thirty minutes of walking, I found myself completely out of breath. I was trying to keep up with my son, who was walking ahead of me and setting the pace.
My heart was pounding. Even in the cold, I was sweating. My legs hurt.
And my mind started racing.
How much longer are we walking?
I won’t make it.
I am in such bad physical condition.
Will I ever improve?
Finally, I stopped.
This is not working for me, I thought.
If I want to make it, and most importantly, if I want to enjoy being outside in this beautiful place, I need to change something.
So I asked myself a simple question.
Claudia, what do you need right now?
I need to breathe slowly.
I need to find a pace that allows me to keep moving forward AND also look up at the trees.
I need to shift my mindset from I am too tired to one step at a time… you’ve got this.
I reminded myself that the point was not to be able to say I did it.
The point was to actually take in the view. The nature. The calm.
To do something hard for me, at my own pace.
Slowly, my heart rate began to settle. My breathing softened.
I started looking up instead of only watching my next step. And suddenly, without even noticing, we had reached the end of the trail.
This experience stayed with me.
Because in many ways, life can feel like that walk.
The endless to-do list. The pressure to keep up. The belief that we will only feel fulfilled once we reach a certain destination. The idea that success only counts if it was hard.
The first lesson is about acceptance.
Acceptance of where we are. Acceptance of who we are. Not as resignation, but as a starting point.
In my work, I often see real change beginning with honest acceptance.
Behavioural change research supports this. When we acknowledge who we are and where we are without judgment, we create the conditions for growth and change. From there, we can start showing up step by step in ways that are realistic and sustainable.
The second lesson was the importance of shifting our thinking from either/or.
Either I am content, or I am ambitious.
Either I am strong, or I am struggling.
What if the simple answer is to replace “or” with “AND”?
It was a beautiful walk AND a hard one.
I feel grateful for what I have AND I am open to what can come next.
I have incredible strengths AND some areas that are still challenging.
I am positive AND I can be going through a difficult time.
I am imperfect in many ways AND whole and real at the same time.
Life is a constant shift. A constant adjustment.
There are moments to move faster.
Moments to slow down.
Moments to focus outward.
Moments to come back to ourselves.
The key is to notice what is needed now. To accept where we are today, and from there keep moving forward with consistency.
In a world that can feel chaotic, this is still within our control.
And maybe it begins with a pause. A moment to ask:
What do I need today?
What choices and actions do I want to make today?
My invitation to you is simple.
Stop for a moment. Take a deep breath.
Accept where you are.
From there, move forward.
One step at a time.
At a pace that allows you to keep going AND to notice the life that is happening around you.
With appreciation,
Claudia
