SEIZE THAT OPPORTUNITY
September is here. Kids are back to school and the days are starting to get shorter.
The arrival of this month often marks new beginnings with new routines and new energy. And this is what makes it an ideal time to ensure that 2017 ends the way we want it to. With just a third of the year left, here is our opportunity to give one last push toward reaching the goals we set in January. Now is our time. Let’s not wait and end up resetting the same goals again this new year.
As I stop to reflect on what I have done, and not done, over the last eight months, I am reminded of a conversation I once had with my wise Uncle Bernardo about “luck and opportunities.” He believed that most of us are surrounded by opportunities.
Only some of us, however, have the guts to grab a hold of them. Some people might assume others are just lucky, but it’s more than that. Even when those people are scared and unsure about what a new change might mean, they still go for it. In contrast, others wait too long. They over analyze what is in front of them, allowing the opportunity to pass.
I refer to this concept a lot in my daily life. I believe we must be willing to take chances and know that even if we fail, we are still learning. We must consider circumstances from a new perspective and jump into new things even when they are scary and uncertain. The hardest part is always taking that first step.
In his book Who Moved My Cheese, Kenneth Blanchard further cements this idea. He explains:
“There are always new opportunities out there,
whether you recognize them at the time or not.
You are rewarded if you go past your fear and enjoy the adventure.”
It will never feel like the perfect time.
You will never be ready enough or know enough. Instead, you must trust yourself and your instincts. You will probably be scared for a while, and may even make mistakes as you go, but you will be moving forward, closer to your goal. So stop over thinking, doubting and feeling scared.
It’s time to just do it.
Whatever you hoped to achieve in 2017—a new job, a new hobby, changing or creating a new habit, entering a different type of relationship, or letting go of something—there is still time. Use the final months of 2017 to refocus on your goals.
